I sent you an e-mail asking if I should go into the field. The more and more I read...the more I think I should just avoid it entirely and write off everything I've done as a sunk cost. If you got the e-mail I'd still like to discuss things with you.
If not, that's okay too. I'm going to probably ask for my refund on the MCAT, I think I can get half of it back. Even if I don't get it back, I'd still save myself another $80k+ in debt (if you go to a state school) at the cost of the $230 or so I had to pay to register
This is the most stupid thing FM could do to itself. One would be better off to do IM/FM for 4 years and be able to do an IM subspecialty if they were still alive afterwards, or just do IM (or peds or Ob/Gyn or EM--i.e. whatever they like best withing FM, but not FM). FM has gotten out of hand. If anything, they should shorten the residency to 2 years as opposed to lengthening it by one more year and having no one want to go into it, especially with all the midlevels around. The only ones that would support this are the lazy attendings in these programs...say no more.
Yeah, the 4 yr FM residency is a stupid idea. I'm pretty sure that's a model/stock photo and not of a real gunner. Even gunners would find the extra year unpalatable!
Just another ploy for by hospitals and medical schools to squeeze another 1 year of underpaid, overworked, abuse-tolerant labor under the guise of noble intentions. How about keeping the residency to 3 years, and cutting out some of the scut that does not contribute to learning. It seems like the answer to any question regarding improving resident education is to increase length of residency training. Don't want to work 30 hours straight? You're going to have to increase length of training. Don't want to work 80+/week? You're going to have to increase length of training. Want more qualified residents? You're going to have to increase length of training. See the pattern?
